COVID HAS CAUSED A DEFICIT IN THE BUDGEtS OF GREECE'S HISTORIC CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS
The Hellenic American Women’s Council – HAWC – is organizing, for the
first time ever, a conference on the beautiful island of Spetses,
Greece, to join “ GREECE 2021 “ and celebrate our Greek identity and
cultural heritage, and to commemorate the Bicentennial of the 1821
Revolution that established Greece as an Independent Nation. The
conference will take place on June 26 – 28, 2021.
The HAWC conference is organized in collaboration with the “ SPETSES
2021 “ committee that includes the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Spetses.
We expect to have wide media coverage including EPT.
We will support and help preserve · three historic and cultural institutions:
·1) The Anargyrios & Korgialenios Foundation Estate:
· The Anargyrios and Korgialenios School of Spetses,
established as a Foundation in 1927.
The venue for the conference is the renown Anargyrios & Korgialenios
Foundation Estate ( Anargyrios ) in Spetses. Sotirios Anargyros, the
founder of the Anargyrios and notable benefactor, was a Greek maritime
merchant from Spetses, who at the end of the 19th century immigrated
to the United States, and became one of the largest tobacco traders of
the time. After returning to his homeland in Spetses, he made it his
lifetime goal to develop the island, and establish an educational
institution that would educate the leaders of the nascent Greek
Society. The fundamental importance of education, was a vision he
shared with the great Greek prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos. So,
in the 1920’s, together with another benefactor, Marinos
Korgialenios, the “ Anargyrios and Korgialenios School of Spetses-
AKSS – was built to emulate the famous British Schools Eton and
Harrow. The Anargyrios has operated as a conference center since 1983.
2) The Bouboulina Museum in Spetses:
The Laskarina Bouboulina Museum in Spetses, established in
1993 as a Museum by Philip Demertzis - Bouboulis, a 5th generation
decendant of Bouboulina.
In the spirit of freedom, we will pay tribute, at the Museum in
Spetses, to the legendary Laskarina Bouboulina, a formidable naval
commander, who became famous for her pivotal role in the Greek War of
Independence.
3) The Lykeion Ellinidon:
The Lykeion Ellinidon, a volunteer women’s organization,
founded in 1911 by Callirhoe Siganou – Parren, Greece’s first woman
journalist.
The Lykeion Ellinidon in its 110 year history has played an active and
important role in the preservation of Greek cultural traditions and
folk customs. It has been awarded twice by the Greek Academy, and in
2012 it was certified as a consultative organization of the UNESCO
inter – governmental committee for the safeguarding of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage.
The HAWC Spetses Event is supporting these institutions.
That is not enough however to maintain these significant cultural symbols.
If you can also support them independently, please do so.
